NCAA Legislated Catastrophic Injury Reporting
Effective August 1, 2014, NCAA institutions are required to report all catastrophic injuries sustained by student-athletes. This website has been established by the NCAA for the purpose of allowing NCAA members to meet this reporting requirement.
The NCAA Sport Science Institute has contracted with The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR) to assist with the collection of catastrophic injury data required to be reported to the NCAA.
The NCAA’s catastrophic injury reporting requirement applies to all catastrophic injuries involving a student-athlete, regardless of the location or context in which the injury occurred.
A non-exhaustive list of the types catastrophic injuries that an NCAA member is required to report is provided in the blue box.

NCAA member institutions must submit data detailing student-athlete catastrophic fatalities, near fatalities, and catastrophic injuries, which includes (but is not limited to):

All deaths of an NCAA student-athlete from ANY cause
OR
-
Near-fatalities and catastrophic injuries to the following body parts:
- Head
- Neck
- Spine
- Heart (cardiac)
- Lungs (pulmonary)
- Eyes
OR
-
Near-fatalities and catastrophic injuries involving the following conditions:
- Heat injuries
- Sickle cell trait
- Cardiac arrest
